Product detailed description

Radar presence sensor MOES HP02: the light stays on as long as you are in the room

MOES HP02 is a compact Zigbee mmWave presence sensor that uses a 24 GHz radar to detect not only movement, but also a person who is simply sitting, reading or sleeping. It picks up breathing and tiny micro-movements, so the automations in your smart home finally react to real presence, not just to whether you waved a hand a moment ago.

The sensor communicates over Zigbee and you control it in the Smart Life, Tuya or MOES app , and thanks to USB-C power you never have to worry about dead batteries. The magnetic mount with an adjustable tilt lets you aim the detection field exactly where you need it.

Why radar instead of a classic PIR sensor

A regular PIR motion sensor reacts to changes in thermal radiation, so only to more noticeable movement. When you sit at your computer or lie on the sofa, it "loses" you after a few minutes and the light turns off. A presence detector with an mmWave radar works differently: it emits millimeter waves and evaluates even subtle changes, such as the rise of your chest when you breathe. The result is reliable information that someone is in the room, even when they barely move.

Radar is also unaffected by room temperature, direct sunlight, light sources or air flow from an air conditioner. Millimeter waves pass through thin materials such as fabric, glass or plastic, so you can place the sensor discreetly, for example behind a thin cover or a decoration.

A detection range you can adapt to the room

The sensor covers a wide field: up to 180° at a distance of 3 m, 140° at 5 m and 60° at the maximum of 6 m. In the app you can limit the maximum detection distance (from 0.75 m to 6 m), so a sensor in a small study will not react to movement in the hallway behind an open door. You can also set the motion sensitivity, the stationary presence sensitivity and the time after which the status changes to "nobody" (from 10 seconds).

Besides presence, the sensor also reports the distance of the detected person and the light level in lux (0 to 10,000 lx). This lets you create an automation such as "turn on the light only if someone is home and it is dim" without an extra light sensor. The event history is kept in the app for up to 30 days.

Instant alerts and home security

The sensor is not only about lights. In the Smart Life app it sends you a push notification to your phone when it detects presence at a time when the house should be empty. Together with a Zigbee gateway and a siren, it can become part of a simple home alarm that activates automatically when you leave the house.

Magnetic mount and stable power

The sensor body is only 49.66 mm in diameter. It sits on a magnetic base that you stick to a wall, ceiling or shelf with double-sided tape. You simply attach the sensor to it, tilt it up to 45° and rotate it 360°, so you aim the detection field exactly at the sofa, bed or desk. No drilling, ideal for rented homes too.

Power comes through USB-C (5 V / 1 A) with a consumption of only 0.5 W. No batteries, and no detection gaps caused by a power-saving mode. Because the sensor is powered permanently, it also works as a Zigbee router and extends the signal range for other devices.

To operate it you need a Zigbee gateway, which is not included in the package. The most logical choice is a gateway from the same manufacturer, the MOES ZHUB-W Zigbee gateway with Wi-Fi for Tuya. The Nous Smart ZigBee and Bluetooth gateway for Tuya also works with the Smart Life and Tuya app, and you will find more options in the Zigbee gateways category. If you are new to the protocol, read our article What is Zigbee and how can it make your life easier.

On the market the sensor also appears under the designation ZSS-LP-HP02-MS (also written ZSS-LP-HP02 or ZSSLPHP02), and technically it is the same device as the Linptech ES1ZZ(TY).

Who the sensor is for

  • For households using the Smart Life / Tuya app that want more reliable automatic lights than a PIR sensor can offer.
  • For Home Assistant with Zigbee2MQTT users who want an affordable radar with adjustable distance and sensitivity.
  • For people working from home whose PIR sensor turns the light off while they sit at the desk.
  • For tenants who do not want to drill or interfere with the electrical installation.

Use cases

  • Office light that does not turn off while you sit: the lighting stays on while you are at the desk and turns off only after you leave.
  • Automatic shutdown of TV and air conditioning in the living room: when the room is empty, the scene turns off the appliances and saves energy.
  • Presence detection in the bedroom: the sensor knows that someone is sleeping in the bed and adjusts night automations (e.g. a motion light in the hallway).
  • Bathroom and toilet: the light and fan keep running while you are inside, even when you are not moving.
  • Home alarm in Smart Life: a phone notification and a siren when presence is detected in an empty house.
  • Heating based on occupancy: thermostatic radiator heads heat fully only in the rooms where you actually spend time.

Key features

  • 24 GHz mmWave radar: detects even a motionless person from breathing and micro-movements.
  • Range up to 6 m: coverage of 180° at 3 m, 140° at 5 m and 60° at 6 m.
  • Adjustable distance: you can narrow the maximum detection range from 0.75 m to 6 m.
  • Two sensitivities: separately for motion and for stationary presence, plus an adjustable release time.
  • Light sensor: measures 0 to 10,000 lx for automations based on daylight.
  • USB-C power: 5 V / 1 A, consumption 0.5 W, no battery replacement.
  • Zigbee router: strengthens the Zigbee network for other devices.
  • Magnetic mount: tilt up to 45°, 360° rotation, installation without drilling.
  • 30-day history: an overview of activity right in the app.

Protocols and compatibility

  • Zigbee 3.0: requires a Zigbee gateway or coordinator, e.g. MOES ZHUB-W or the Nous Zigbee gateway for Tuya. The sensor works as a Zigbee router.
  • Smart Life / Tuya / MOES: full support including distance, sensitivity and release time settings, notifications and a 30-day history.
  • Amazon Alexa and Google Home: through the Smart Life/Tuya app integration, the sensor can trigger routines.
  • Zigbee2MQTT (Home Assistant): supported (identified as Linptech ES1ZZ(TY), TS0225), all settings are available as in the Tuya app. A suitable coordinator is, for example, the SMLIGHT SLZB-MR1.
  • Home Assistant ZHA: only basic support for now (presence); settings and the light sensor require a custom quirk. For full functionality we recommend Zigbee2MQTT.

Why choose the MOES HP02

  • Reliable detection of a motionless person at the price of an ordinary sensor, with no light turning off while you sit.
  • Permanent power and router function: no batteries and a stronger Zigbee network.
  • Flexible mounting thanks to the magnetic mount with tilt and rotation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a presence sensor and a motion sensor?+

A PIR motion sensor reacts only to more noticeable movement of a warm body. A presence sensor with an mmWave radar also detects a motionless person from breathing and micro-movements, so the light does not turn off when you sit or sleep.

Do I need a gateway for the MOES HP02 sensor?+

Yes, the sensor communicates over Zigbee and needs a Zigbee gateway (e.g. the MOES ZHUB-W for Smart Life and Tuya) or a Zigbee coordinator for Home Assistant. The gateway is not included in the package.

Does the sensor have a battery? The box contains a "charging" cable.+

No, the sensor has no battery and must be powered permanently via USB-C (5 V / 1 A). The included USB cable is used for power. There is no USB mains adapter in the box, so use any common USB charger with an output of at least 1 A.

How do I pair the sensor with the Smart Life app?+

Connect the sensor to power, open the Zigbee gateway in the app and choose to add a sub-device. If the sensor does not enter pairing mode on its own, hold the reset button until the indicator starts blinking quickly. You will find the exact procedure in the included manual.

Does the MOES HP02 work with Home Assistant?+

Yes, best through Zigbee2MQTT, where it is supported as the Linptech ES1ZZ(TY) with all settings. In the ZHA integration only basic presence detection works for now, and advanced settings require a custom quirk.

Can it be controlled through Alexa or Google Home?+

Yes, indirectly. After linking your Smart Life/Tuya account with Alexa or Google Home, the sensor can trigger routines. However, you change the sensitivity and distance settings in the Smart Life app.

Where should I place the sensor and at what height?+

Aim the sensor at the place where you spend time (sofa, desk, bed), ideally from a wall or shelf at chest to head height. Avoid places where a fan, a curtain moving in the wind or moving plants are in view, as they can cause false detections.

The sensor reports presence even when the room is empty. What can I do?+

In the app, lower the stationary presence sensitivity (we recommend a value of 3 to 4) and limit the maximum detection distance so the radar does not scan the space behind a wall or door. Also check that there is no air flow or moving objects in view.

Can the indicator light on the sensor be turned off?+

No, the indicator blinks during detection and cannot be turned off in the app. If you place the sensor in a bedroom, aim it so the indicator does not shine directly at the bed, or cover it with a small piece of opaque tape.

Does the radar pass through a wall?+

It passes through thin materials such as fabric, glass or plastic, but practically not through a masonry wall. With plasterboard partitions the sensor may pick up movement in the neighboring room, in which case limiting the maximum detection distance helps.

Is the MOES HP02 the same as the ZSS-LP-HP02-MS or the Linptech ES1?+

Yes. ZSS-LP-HP02-MS is the manufacturer code for the MOES HP02, and hardware-wise it is the same sensor as the Linptech ES1ZZ(TY), which is why Zigbee2MQTT recognizes it under that name.

Can I use the sensor outdoors or in a bathroom?+

The sensor is designed for indoor use at a temperature of -10 to 40 °C and humidity up to 95 % without condensation. In a bathroom, place it away from direct contact with water and steam, and do not use it outdoors.
