LIVOLO Touch Switches: How to Choose and Order Them Correctly

Beautiful LIVOLO touch switches already decorate many homes. However, when purchasing them, customers often ask how to properly order the switches, how to combine LIVOLO switches with frames, and how to choose the right LIVOLO switches for Smart Home use, for example. In this article, we will talk about all this.

LIVOLO touch switches are highly popular mainly due to the quality of their workmanship and the fact that they offer a great option to use up to a 5-gang frame. This is great mainly because you don't have to deal with the fact that multiple switches next to each other look a bit weird, like with other glass switches.

Of course, the fact that you can use a 1 to 5-gang frame, which is sold as a single glass with "rings" for pressing, also means that there are many frame combinations. Someone wants to have all single switches in a 5-gang frame, someone needs double switches, and someone else needs a combination of single and double switches with sockets.

Livolo really offers switches for everyone. Whether you want a simple switch, a "staircase" switch, or a switch for a Smart Home, you will find everything in the offer. To simplify the whole selection process, let's divide the products into two categories:

  • Livolo modules
  • Livolo frames

The entire switch consists precisely of these two components. Customers often also decide to first purchase only the modules, install them, and then order the frames according to the real situation. Once you install the modules, you can already use them and see exactly what frame you need where.

Step 1 - Choosing LIVOLO modules

First of all, it is good to define what you will use the switches for. Livolo offers these two options:

  • Standard switches and buttons - for everyone who wants the LIVOLO design just as a replacement for standard wall switches.
  • Potential-free switches and buttons - an ideal solution if you want to use LIVOLO with any Smart Home system (we choose 230V or 24V versions).

Choosing standard LIVOLO switches

Here the situation is identical to common switches from other manufacturers. Your electrician will tell you from the project what switches and how many you need. It is important to note that LIVOLO switches in this category do not require a neutral wire! So installation is possible even in homes with old electrical wiring.

  • Touch switch number 1: You control one lighting circuit from one place.
  • Touch switch number 5: Controlling two lights from one place (classic double switch).
  • Touch switch number 6: Staircase switch for controlling one circuit from two places. It does not require special wiring, but the connection is different (they have a communication cable for connection and pairing).
  • Touch switch number 5B: Also known as 6+6, for controlling two circuits from two places.
  • Touch switch number 7: Used where you need to control one light from three or more places (6-7-6 connection).
  • Touch switch for blinds: For shading devices (230VAC).
  • Sockets: LIVOLO does not offer double sockets, you choose individual modules according to color and pieces.

If we want to use switches with smart systems (FIBARO, Homey, Loxone, TapHome), the situation has specific rules:

  • We must always choose the "potential-free version". The input is separated from the output, and we need a neutral wire for functionality.
  • The backlight of standard switches cannot be controlled by a Smart Home system (blue = off, red = on). Therefore, for Smart Home we use LIVOLO buttons (they shine blue, red when pressed). We set in the system that they are buttons, which also allows us to dim by holding a finger.
  • Depending on the wiring, we choose the 230VAC version (classic installation) or the 24VDC version (data cables to the distribution box, e.g., for Loxone).

You have a choice of these 4 basic modules for Smart Home:

LIVOLO offers almost all combinations from a 1-gang to a 5-gang frame. Basically, it's just 3 basic modules that you put together:

  • Frame with one hole (circle) for a single switch / button
  • Frame with two holes for a double switch / button
  • Frame with a hole for a socket

On our e-shop, you can use the filter to help you choose the right configuration and color. Go to LIVOLO frame selection.

Important final notes

During installation, it is important that the installation boxes are at least 45mm deep (ideally 60mm), and that they are installed perfectly level, especially for long 5-gang frames. Since it is glass, the frame will not adapt to the unevenness of the plaster.

Before actually putting on the glass frame, it is also necessary to turn off the circuit breaker. Proper calibration of the touch surface will only take place after putting on the glass and turning the circuit breaker back on.
