Product detailed description

Aqara Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400: a radar presence sensor that knows who is in the room and where 📡

Aqara Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 Kit (model PS-S05D, also listed as PSS05D) is a new-generation mmWave presence sensor with 60 GHz radar and on-device AI. Unlike a standard motion sensor, it does not react only to movement: it also detects a person sitting still on the sofa, working at a desk or sleeping, and it knows which part of the room they are in.

It tracks up to 10 people at once, distinguishes up to 8 custom zones (sofa, dining table, work corner) and supports both Zigbee and Matter over Thread. This lets you connect it to Aqara Home, Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. The Kit also includes a mounting bracket, so you can install the sensor on a wall, in a corner or on the ceiling without extra accessories.

Aqara FP400 presence sensor with 60 GHz radar and multi-person tracking

Real-time tracking of up to 10 people

A classic sensor only tells you “someone is home”. The FP400 presence multi-sensor goes further: in the Aqara Home app you see a room map with each person's position, and the sensor continuously reports the current number of people. This is useful in shared spaces, offices or short-term rentals where you want to know how many people are in the apartment, without a camera or subscription.

Precise zones with a 0.5 × 0.5 m grid

You can divide the room into up to 8 custom zones. Detection is based on a grid with a resolution of 0.5 × 0.5 m (320 cells over an area of 8 × 10 m), so the “sofa” zone and the “dining table” zone work independently even when they are only a few steps apart. Each zone is a separate automation trigger: sit down on the sofa and the ambient light turns on, leave your desk and the monitor switches off.

You set up zones in the Aqara Home app and can also share them to other platforms via Matter as separate occupancy sensors. An AI assistant helps by suggesting a zone layout based on how you move around the room.

60 GHz mmWave radar and 4T4R MIMO antenna

At the heart of the sensor is the latest 60 GHz mmWave radar with a 4T4R MIMO antenna array. According to the manufacturer, it captures more than 5x denser data (point cloud) than the previous generation. In practice, this means more precise tracking, better separation of two people close together and reliable detection of even small movements, such as breathing while reading or sleeping.

Fewer false triggers: AI tells a person from a dog or a robot vacuum

The most common complaint about radar sensors is false alarms. The FP400 solves this with AI human recognition: it distinguishes human movement from pets, robot vacuums, fans or moving curtains. The sensor also gradually learns its environment, and you can mark sources of interference in the app as zones to ignore.

No camera, privacy friendly

The FP400 has no camera or microphone. The radar only senses reflections of radio waves, so no image or recording is ever created. That is why you can safely install it where you would never put a camera: in a bedroom, a children's room or a bathroom. Thanks to its IPX5 rating, it also handles humidity and splashing water.

Wall, corner or ceiling mounting

Its field of view is 120° horizontal and 100° vertical. When mounted on a side wall, it covers an area up to 10 m deep and 8 m wide; in a corner, approximately 7 × 7 m. For ceiling mounting, the manufacturer recommends a height of 3 to 4 m: from 3 m it covers 5 × 6 m for motion and 4 × 5 m for static presence directly below the sensor. If you want to cover the whole room without blind spots, the manufacturer recommends corner mounting.

The sensor is permanently powered via USB-C (5 V, 1 A), so there are no batteries to replace and the radar can run at full power 24 hours a day. You can attach it with an adhesive pad, magnetically via the metal plate or with screws.

Fine-tune it for every room

You can choose from 3 sensitivity levels: higher suits quiet rooms where people sit or sleep for long periods, lower suits busy spaces where you want to reduce false reports. You can also set the absence confirmation period, i.e. how long the sensor waits before declaring the room empty. That way the light does not switch off as soon as you stop moving for a moment.

People counting and light sensor

In addition to presence, the sensor continuously reports the current number of people in the room, locally and without a subscription. The built-in ambient light sensor measures the brightness in the room, so lights only turn on when it is really dark, and blinds or curtains can respond to daylight. One presence detector thus replaces both a motion sensor and a separate light sensor.

You unlock the full feature set (position map, zones, people counting, local automations) with a compatible Aqara hub, for example Aqara Hub M3 or Aqara Hub M200. If you are not sure which one to choose, our guide to choosing an Aqara hubwill help.

Who is the Aqara FP400 for

  • For homes where the light switches off when someone sits still watching TV or reading, and a standard PIR sensor cannot solve it.
  • For Aqara ecosystem users with Hub M3, M200 or M100 who want zone-based automations in a room.
  • For Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and Home Assistant users looking for a Matter presence sensor over Thread.
  • For landlords and Airbnb hosts who want to know how many people are in the apartment without a camera.
  • For offices and meeting rooms where lighting, heating and air conditioning should follow actual occupancy.
  • For anyone who values privacy and does not want cameras at home.

Use cases in a smart home 🏠

  • Light that stays on while you sit: the living room stays lit as long as someone is in it, even if they are not moving.
  • Sofa relax mode: when you sit in the sofa zone for at least 20 seconds between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM, the ambient light turns on and the air conditioner switches to comfort mode.
  • Over-occupancy alert: in a short-term rental you get a notification if there are more than 4 people in the apartment.
  • Energy savings on heating: thermostatic radiator heads and air conditioning reduce output when nobody is in the room.
  • No more dark bathroom: the light and fan stay on while you shower, and the IPX5 rating handles the humidity.
  • Work corner: when you leave your desk, the monitor and desk lamp switch off; when you sit down, everything turns on.
  • Night lighting based on brightness: when you get up at night, only a dimmed light turns on, and only when it is really dark.

Protocols and compatibility

  • Aqara Home + Aqara hub (recommended): full functionality including the position map, up to 8 zones, people counting and local automations. Connection via Matter over Thread (default) or Zigbee; the protocol is switched in the app.
  • Supported Aqara hubs: Hub M3, Hub M100, Hub M200, Doorbell Camera Hub G410 and Camera Hub G5 Pro. According to the manufacturer, support for Thermostat Hub W200, MagicPad S1, Panel Hub S1 Plus and Camera Hub G350 is planned during 2026.
  • Unsupported hubs: Hub M2, Hub M1S, Hub M1S Gen 2, Hub E1, Camera Hub G3, Smart Video Doorbell G4 and Camera Hub G2H Pro.
  • Matter (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant): after setup in Aqara Home, you share the sensor using the Matter pairing code. The target platform receives a whole-area occupancy sensor and up to 8 zone sensors. You need a Matter controller and a Thread Border Router supported by that platform. The position map stays in Aqara Home only.
  • Without an Aqara hub, via an existing Thread network: with a third-party Thread Border Router (e.g. Apple TV, HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub) you can set up the sensor in Aqara Home without an Aqara hub, including zones and sensitivity, and share it via Matter.
  • Direct connection to a Matter platform without Aqara Home: not recommended by the manufacturer; the sensor then works only as a single whole-area occupancy sensor without zones.
  • Zigbee2MQTT and ZHA: as of 1 October 2026, the FP400 is not on the Zigbee2MQTT list of supported devices. For Home Assistant, we therefore recommend connecting via Matter.

Why choose the Aqara FP400

  • It knows not only whether someone is in the room, but also where and how many people are there.
  • Two protocols in one device: fast local automations with an Aqara hub and Matter for other platforms.
  • AI filter against false triggers from pets and robot vacuums.
  • Kit with a bracket for wall, corner and ceiling mounting right in the box.

Compared to the Wi-Fi model Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 , the FP400 has a newer 60 GHz radar with denser data, tracks up to 10 people instead of 5, has an AI interference filter and an IPX5 rating, and uses Zigbee and Thread instead of Wi-Fi, so it does not load your home Wi-Fi network. If you only need simple battery-powered presence detection without zones, have a look at the Aqara FP300 or Aqara FP1Ewill help.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a presence sensor and a motion sensor? +

A motion sensor (PIR) reacts to heat changes caused by movement, so it “loses” a person who sits still after a while. A presence sensor with mmWave radar also detects small movements such as breathing, so it knows someone is still in the room. The FP400 also determines the position and number of people.

Do I need a hub for the Aqara FP400? +

For full functionality (position map, zones, people counting, local automations) we recommend a compatible Aqara hub: M3, M100, M200, G410 or G5 Pro. Without an Aqara hub, you can set it up in Aqara Home via a third-party Thread Border Router (including zones and sensitivity) and share it to other platforms via Matter.

Does the FP400 work with Aqara Hub E1, M2 or G2H Pro? +

No. According to the manufacturer, the FP400 is not supported by Hub M2, M1S, M1S Gen 2, E1, Camera Hub G3, G2H Pro or Smart Video Doorbell G4. If you have one of these, you need a newer hub (e.g. M100 or M3) or a Thread Border Router.

Does the Aqara FP400 work with Apple Home and HomeKit? +

Yes, via Matter. First set up the sensor in the Aqara Home app, then add it to Apple Home using the Matter pairing code. You need an Apple TV or HomePod mini as a Thread Border Router and home hub. In Apple Home you will see a whole-area occupancy sensor and the zones you have set up.

Can the FP400 be used with Home Assistant? +

Yes, via the Matter integration in Home Assistant and a Thread Border Router. We recommend setting up the sensor in Aqara Home first and then sharing it to Home Assistant, so you also get the zones. As of 1 October 2026, there is no native support in Zigbee2MQTT yet.

Will the sensor detect me even when I sit still or sleep? +

Yes, that is the main advantage of mmWave radar. It detects breathing and small body movements. For a bedroom or home office, set a higher sensitivity and a longer absence confirmation period.

Will the sensor react to a dog, cat or robot vacuum? +

With AI human recognition switched on, the sensor tells people apart from pets and vacuums and greatly reduces false triggers. You can also mark places where interference sources often move (a pet bed, a vacuum dock) as zones for the sensor to ignore. The radar may misjudge small children or a person crawling on the floor.

How large a room does the FP400 cover and where should I place it? +

On a side wall it covers up to 10 × 8 m, in a corner approximately 7 × 7 m and on a ceiling at 3 m roughly 5 × 6 m. To cover the whole room without blind spots, the manufacturer recommends corner mounting. Do not point the sensor at windows, fans or moving curtains.

Can I put the FP400 in a bathroom? +

Yes. It is IPX5 rated, so it handles humidity and splashing water. However, do not place it directly in the shower, and keep in mind that it needs permanent USB-C power.

Can the FP400 run on batteries? +

No, a radar with continuous people tracking needs permanent 5 V, 1 A power via USB-C. A USB-C to USB-C cable is included; you need your own power adapter (a standard USB charger is enough). If you are looking for a battery-powered presence sensor, have a look at the Aqara FP300.

What is the difference between the FP400 and the FP400 Kit? +

The sensor is the same. The Kit version (PS-S05D) additionally includes a mounting bracket that makes it easy to angle the sensor when mounting it on a wall, in a corner or on the ceiling. The basic FP400 version is labelled PS-S05E.

How accurately does the FP400 count people? +

It tracks up to 10 people at once. If people stand very close together (less than about 1 m), the count may be off by a few people. The value is therefore ideal for approximate automations (e.g. an over-occupancy alert), not for exact visitor counting.

Does the FP400 record or send images from my home? +

No. The sensor has no camera or microphone; the radar only registers reflections of radio waves, which do not produce any image. People counting and automations with an Aqara hub run locally.

What should I do if the sensor will not pair? +

Check that you have a supported Aqara hub with up-to-date firmware and the latest version of the Aqara Home app. When pairing via Thread, the Thread Border Router must be online and on the same network as your phone. If that does not help, reset the sensor according to the manual and repeat pairing closer to the hub.
