Aqara T1 Single Switch Module (No Neutral Required)

The Aqara Single Switch T1 is a microscopic, in-wall Zigbee relay designed to be installed completely hidden inside the electrical backbox, right behind your existing light switch. You get to keep your room's aesthetic and manual switches, while unlocking powerful voice and smartphone controls.

The 'No Neutral' Lifesaver for Older Homes

The biggest hurdle in smart home lighting retrofits is the dreaded Neutral wire. Standard smart relays require both Live and Neutral wires to power their internal radios. Unfortunately, in older residential builds, electricians frequently only ran the Live wire down into the wall switch, leaving the Neutral wire isolated in the ceiling rose. This specific Aqara model (SSM-U02) is a technological lifesaver because it operates WITHOUT requiring a Neutral (N) wire connection! It siphons power directly through the interrupted live loop.

Critical Limitations of the 'No Neutral' Design

Because the relay must constantly let a micro-trickle of current leak through the lightbulb to keep its Zigbee chip alive, the technical capabilities differ significantly from the 'With Neutral' version. Please be aware of the following:

• Lower Power Handling: The internal circuitry restricts the maximum load to 5.4 A (approximately 1250W resistive). This device is engineered strictly for lighting circuits. It MUST NOT be used to switch heavy appliances, heaters, or motorized window blinds!
• No Power Metering or Repeater Function: Unlike the Neutral version, this module does not monitor energy consumption. Furthermore, due to extreme energy rationing, it does not act as a Zigbee network repeater/router.
• Minimum 3W Load: The lightbulb attached to this circuit must draw at least 3 Watts of power. If the bulb's consumption is too low, the required micro-current leakage might cause the LED to flicker or glow dimly when turned 'off'.

Smart Home Automation & Apple HomeKit

Operating on the robust Zigbee 3.0 protocol, this module requires a Zigbee hub (like the Aqara Hub) to connect. Once paired, it provides seamless native integration into Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. From the app, you can create precise lighting schedules, link the relay to an Aqara motion sensor for automatic activation, and control your lights remotely from across the globe.
