Product detailed description

Nice Plug-Control2 E Smart Plug: Control and Energy Metering over Z-Wave 800

Nice Plug-Control2 E is the second generation of the Z-Wave smart plug with energy metering from Nice (formerly FIBARO), also listed as Plug Control 2 or PlugControl2. Plug it into a standard type E socket, as used in Slovakia, the Czech Republic or Poland, and connect any appliance rated up to 2,750 W. From then on you can switch it on and off remotely from your phone, on a schedule or in scenes, and see exactly how much energy it uses.

Unlike ordinary smart plugs, Plug-Control2 measures electricity in both directions: the consumption of the connected appliance and the energy fed into the grid by a small balcony solar system with a microinverter. It works with the Yubii Home and Yubii Home Pro hubs, FIBARO Home Center 3 and Home Center 3 Lite, as well as other certified Z-Wave controllers.

Accurate power and energy metering

The Plug-Control2 smart plug measures instantaneous active power (W) in real time and continuously calculates consumed energy (kWh). You will finally find out what your old fridge, the freezer in the basement, a dehumidifier, coffee machine or your whole home office really costs you. The data is shown in the Energy panel of the Yubii Home app, where you can see consumption per room and its development over time. We describe how to set up energy monitoring in practice in our article Monitoring energy consumption with the FIBARO home automation system.

Continuous metering also adds safety: the hub can detect unusual consumption, for example when the fridge starts running non-stop or the washing machine draws more than usual, and alert you before a small fault turns into an expensive repair. Optionally, the plug can also report mains voltage and send a notification on overvoltage.

Microinverter support: metering your balcony solar output

Most smart plugs measure in one direction only. Plug-Control2 can read and report produced energy from any plug-in microinverter rated up to 2.75 kW. Simply connect it between the microinverter and the socket and enable production reporting in the hub. Yubii Home can then start appliances (air conditioning, a pool pump, a scooter charger) exactly when your panels produce the most.

LED ring that shows the load at a glance

The multicolour LED ring changes colour according to the current load, so even from across the room you can see whether an appliance is on standby or running at full power. The ring also indicates network inclusion, SmartStart, firmware updates and alarms from other Z-Wave sensors, and works as a range tester: its colour shows whether the plug communicates with the hub directly or through another device. You can set the colour for the on and off states, or switch the illumination off completely, for example in a bedroom.

Protection and automation right inside the plug

The remotely controlled Plug-Control2 has several functions that run directly in the device, without complex scenes:

  • Switch-off when power is exceeded: an adjustable threshold of 1 to 3,100 W above which the plug turns itself off.
  • Automatic switch-off after a set time or when the load drops below a chosen value, ideal for chargers that stay connected after charging.
  • Always-On mode: prevents accidental switch-off of a fridge, freezer or router from the app or with the button.
  • Alarm response: on a smoke, CO, flood or gas alarm from your Z-Wave sensors, the plug can switch the appliance off immediately (e.g. an electric heater).
  • State restore after a power failure: when power returns, the plug goes back to its last state.

Secure Z-Wave 800 radio

Plug-Control2 is built on the latest Z-Wave 800 series chip, which offers longer range, a more stable connection and better security than the older 500 series. It supports Security S2 Authenticated with AES-128 encryption and SmartStart: add the plug to Yubii Home by scanning a QR code with your phone. As it is permanently mains powered, it also works as a signal repeater and strengthens the whole Z-Wave mesh network in your home.

Why choose Nice Plug-Control2 E

  • One of the few Z-Wave plugs that meters both consumption and production of electricity.
  • Up to 2,750 W and a modern Z-Wave 800 radio with S2 security.
  • Protection functions and automations run directly in the plug, not just in the hub.
  • Direct successor of the FIBARO plug from the same manufacturer, fully aligned with the Yubii system.

Compared with the older FIBARO Wall Plug E, you get a higher maximum load, the newer Z-Wave 800 radio with longer range, SmartStart and microinverter production metering. The older FIBARO plug is still a good choice if you only need simple switching and consumption metering at a lower price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add Plug-Control2 to Yubii Home? +

The easiest way is SmartStart: scan the QR code on the plug or box in the Yubii Home app and plug it in. The hub adds it automatically within 10 minutes. Alternatively, put the hub into inclusion mode and quickly press the B-button on the plug three times.

Does the plug work with FIBARO Home Center 3 and HC3 Lite? +

Yes, the manufacturer states compatibility with Home Center 3 and Home Center 3 Lite. Before adding it, we recommend updating the hub to the latest firmware so that all functions, including production metering, are displayed correctly.

Can Plug-Control2 be used without a hub, over Wi-Fi only? +

No. The plug communicates exclusively over Z-Wave and needs a Z-Wave hub, such as Yubii Home, for remote control and consumption data. Without a hub you can only switch it on and off manually with the B-button.

How do I measure the output of balcony solar panels? +

Connect the plug between the microinverter and the wall socket and enable the energy and power meter view in the hub. Plug-Control2 then reports energy produced by a microinverter rated up to 2.75 kW. Note: switching off the microinverter remotely may trip a residual current device, so use an RCD designed for this kind of installation.

What appliances can I connect to the plug? +

Resistive loads (heater, kettle, coffee machine) up to 2,750 W, i.e. 12 A continuous. For appliances with a motor or power supply (inductive and capacitive loads), expect a lower limit; the manufacturer does not recommend loads above 3 A at cos φ 0.4. Do not plug one Plug-Control2 into another.

What do the LED ring colours mean? +

In normal mode the colour reflects the current load. During inclusion, green means standard inclusion, magenta means inclusion in S2 Authenticated mode and red means inclusion failed. Blinking cyan indicates a firmware update. You can change the illumination or switch it off completely.

The plug will not pair, what should I do? +

Move it closer to the hub and first try exclusion by pressing the B-button three times while the hub is in exclusion mode. Then add it again. If that does not help, perform a factory reset: hold the B-button until the ring lights yellow, release it and press it briefly. A red light confirms the reset.

How does Plug-Control2 differ from the older FIBARO Wall Plug? +

Plug-Control2 has a higher maximum load (2,750 W), the newer Z-Wave 800 chip with better range, SmartStart support, microinverter production metering and more protection functions. The older FIBARO plug remains a cheaper option for simple switching and consumption metering.

What is the difference between the E and F versions? +

They differ in socket type. Version E has an earth pin, as used in Slovakia, the Czech Republic or Poland. Version F (Schuko) has earthing contacts on the sides and is used, for example, in Germany or Austria. Version E is intended for Slovak and Czech households.

Does the plug protect the appliance against short circuit or overload? +

The plug can switch the appliance off when the set power is exceeded and reports overcurrent, overvoltage or overheating. However, the manufacturer points out that this function does not replace a circuit breaker or short-circuit protection, which must be provided by the electrical installation.

How do I reset the metered consumption? +

Hold the B-button until the ring lights green, release it and press it briefly. The consumption and production memory is cleared. You can also reset it from the hub.

Can I use the plug outdoors or in a bathroom? +

No. Plug-Control2 is intended only for dry indoor spaces with a temperature of 0 to 40 °C. Do not handle it with wet hands.
