Smart beaded chain blind driver: automatic roller blinds without replacing the motor

The Aqara Roller Shade Driver E1 (model RSD-M01) is a small motor drive that you mount on the wall next to the window and thread the beaded chain of your blind into. From now on you no longer have to pull the blind by hand: it raises or lowers it on its own when you tell it to, when a schedule says so or when bright sunlight hits the window.

The device communicates via Zigbee 3.0, so it needs an Aqara hub. In return you get a stable, energy-efficient connection and the option to include your blinds in automations with sensors, buttons and voice assistants from Apple, Google and Amazon.

Most motorised blinds are sold as a complete unit: a new blind, a new motor, often new wiring too. The Aqara E1 smart blind driver takes a different approach. You keep the blind you already have and only add the drive. It is an ideal solution for rented flats, children's rooms or anywhere you do not want to drill into the window frame or run new cables.

Installation in three steps: screw or stick the driver to the wall, fit the right adapter and insert the chain. The package includes adapters for most common beaded chains 3 to 6 mm thick (with plastic or metal beads). Then just set the upper and lower limits in the Aqara Home app and the driver remembers where the blind should stop.

You choose the power supply. The built-in lithium battery lasts approximately 2 months when a 1.8 × 1.8 m blind is raised and lowered once a day. It charges via USB-C. If there is a socket near the window, you can leave the cable connected permanently and forget about charging altogether. A USB-C cable is included; use your own power adapter (5 V, 1 A).

Custom blind positions: the blind does not have to be just fully up or down. In the app you can set any opening percentage, for example 80 % in the morning and 10 % at noon when UV rays stream into the room. Switch between saved positions with one tap, by voice or with the button on the device.

The real fun starts with automations. The Aqara M1S hub has a built-in light sensor: when the sun is too bright, the blind lowers itself and you save on cooling in summer. You can also link a door sensor or the Aqara P1 motion sensor to your blinds, so they close when you come home or go to bed.
