Product detailed description

📡 Long-range LoRa communication for Shelly Pro devices

The Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on is a professional DIN rail communication module that gives Shelly Pro devices a wireless link over long distances. Instead of Wi-Fi it uses LoRa in the EU868 band, a technology designed the opposite way round to ordinary home networks: it sends very little data, but it carries that data a very long way and through obstacles where Wi-Fi gives up.

In practice this means a switch inside the house can reliably control a relay in an outbuilding, at a well or at the far end of the property – up to 5 km in open terrain, with no cable run, no repeater and no monthly fees for a data SIM.

Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on clipped onto a DIN rail next to a Shelly Pro device, with the antenna on the SMA-M connector

Range that Wi-Fi will never give you

The module transmits in the licence-free EU868 band (863 – 870 MHz) at up to 14 dBm. A lower frequency than Wi-Fi means better penetration through walls, trees and uneven terrain – which is why a LoRa module often works where a Wi-Fi extender or mesh network did not. The stated range of up to 5,000 m applies to line of sight; in dense built-up areas expect considerably less, but still hundreds of metres through several walls.

You can also fine-tune the range yourself via the Spreading Factor (SF). A lower SF = faster transfer over a shorter distance, a higher SF = slower transfer but significantly greater range and better resistance to interference. When you are switching something remotely, a few hundred extra milliseconds are imperceptible, so in most installations it pays to favour range.

Powered straight from the Shelly Pro, no extra power supply

The add-on has no power supply of its own – it draws 3.3 V directly from the connected Shelly Pro device and consumes less than 150 mW. So you need no extra terminal, adapter or free space for a power supply in the enclosure; the module simply clips onto the DIN rail next to the Shelly device and connects to it. At 94 × 19 × 78 mm (94 × 19 × 92 mm including the antenna) it takes up an absolute minimum of space.

The antenna sits on an SMA-M connector with 50 Ω impedance, so if needed you can swap it for an external higher-gain antenna and route it outside a metal enclosure – with steel cabinets that is the most common and cheapest way to significantly extend the real-world range.

Encrypted communication and several devices at once

Transmission is secured with AES-CCM encryption and the module supports unicast, multicast and broadcast addressing. In practice that means you are not limited to a single transmitter–receiver pair: you can just as easily set up one transmitter with several receivers (one button turns off the lights in three buildings at once) or several transmitters with one receiver (several sensors reporting status to a single enclosure).

The Shelly Pro device the add-on is attached to does not lose any of its normal functionality – it still switches, measures and can be controlled locally and through the app. The LoRa link runs alongside all of that. If you already have a Shelly Pro 1 or a Shelly Pro 1PM with power metering in your enclosure, adding LoRa is a matter of one module. You will find the whole range in our Shelly product offer.

Because the EU868 band has a legally limited transmission time (duty cycle), the module has a built-in Safety Stop safeguard – once it reaches 25 % of the recommended hourly transmission time it throttles transmission by itself so that you stay within the permitted limit. You do not have to keep an eye on compliance yourself.

Who the Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on is for

  • Owners of larger plots and farmsteads, where the gate, well, garage or barn is far outside the reach of home Wi-Fi.
  • Electricians and installers who need to link two enclosures without chasing walls and pulling cable between buildings.
  • Businesses and industrial sites – warehouses, halls, farms, guesthouses, where switching and metering has to happen across several buildings under one system.
  • Shelly Pro users who have already hit the limits of Wi-Fi and do not want to deal with repeaters, powerline adapters or mobile data.
  • Owners of cabins and holiday properties without a stable internet connection, where control has to work completely offline.

🔧 Use cases

  • Controlling a gate or lighting at the far end of the property – switch by the house, relay by the gate, hundreds of metres between them with no cable.
  • A well pump or garden irrigation – start it from the house even where Wi-Fi has never reached.
  • Linking two buildings (house – barn, shop – warehouse) with no trenching and no fibre.
  • Remote energy metering together with the Shelly Pro 3EM – data from a sub-distribution board reaches the place where you actually monitor it.
  • A cabin without internet – the local LoRa link keeps working during a network outage, nothing goes through the cloud.
  • Agricultural and industrial buildings with thick concrete walls, where a 2.4 GHz signal dies after a few metres.

Why choose the Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on

  • Range that Wi-Fi and Zigbee cannot reach – up to 5 km with no repeaters and no cable run.
  • No monthly costs – EU868 is a licence-free band, you need no SIM card and no data plan.
  • Works offline too – the link between the modules is direct and does not depend on the internet or the cloud.
  • Takes neither power nor space – 19 mm on the DIN rail and 3.3 V straight from the Shelly Pro device.

Compared with a Wi-Fi repeater or powerline adapters you save not only on hardware but above all on failure rate – the fewer links in the chain, the fewer things can go wrong. And unlike a mobile connection, your link does not stop working when the operator has an outage.

Frequently asked questions

Is one unit enough, or do I need two?+

For a working LoRa link you need at least two modules – one on the transmitting side and one on the receiving side, each connected to its own Shelly Pro device. This product is sold as a single unit, so order two for a new installation.

Which Shelly devices is it compatible with?+

The manufacturer lists Shelly Pro 1, Pro 1PM, Pro 2, Pro 2PM, Pro 3EM, Pro EM-50, Pro Dimmer 0/1–10 V PM, Pro Dimmer 1PM/2PM and Pro RGBWW PM. The list may grow with new firmware.

Does it work with Shelly Plus, Gen3 or Pro 4PM?+

No. The add-on is intended exclusively for the Shelly Pro range, and the Pro 4PM is not on the current list of compatible devices. If you are not sure about your model, get in touch – we will check it for you.

Do I need Wi-Fi, internet or a SIM card?+

No. The LoRa link between two modules is direct and works completely without internet. You will only need Wi-Fi if you also want to control the devices from the app or from outside your home.

Will I really get 5 kilometres?+

Five kilometres applies to clear line of sight with no obstacles. In ordinary built-up areas expect hundreds of metres to a kilometre – still far more than Wi-Fi can manage. Routing the antenna outside a metal enclosure and using a higher Spreading Factor both help extend the range.

How is the module powered and mounted?+

It mounts on a DIN rail and is powered with 3.3 V directly from the connected Shelly Pro device. No separate power supply or extra terminals are needed.

What is the Spreading Factor and how should I set it?+

The Spreading Factor determines the trade-off between speed and range. A lower SF transmits faster over a shorter distance, a higher SF is slower but reaches further and copes better with interference. For switching a light or a gate, a higher SF is usually the better choice.

Why does the module sometimes limit transmission?+

That is the Safety Stop function. The EU868 band has a regulatory limit on transmission time (duty cycle), and once the module reaches 25 % of the recommended hourly limit it throttles transmission by itself so you stay compliant.

Is the communication secure?+

Yes, transmission is encrypted using AES-CCM. The module supports unicast, multicast and broadcast addressing, so you can target exactly which device should receive a message.

Can more than two devices be linked?+

Yes. One-to-one, one-to-many and many-to-one setups are all supported – for example one button controlling three remote relays, or three sensors reporting status to a single enclosure.

Will the Shelly Pro device stop working normally?+

No. The device works as a regular Shelly (switching, metering, controlled via the app and locally) and as a LoRa communication node at the same time.

Do I need a licence to transmit?+

No. EU868 is a licence-free band and the module transmits at up to 14 dBm within European regulations. The built-in Safety Stop takes care of staying within the permitted transmission time.

What is in the box?+

One Shelly Pro LoRa Add-on module including the antenna on an SMA connector. The Shelly Pro device that the module attaches to is not included.
