A PoE splitter that turns a network cable into power ⚡

The SMLIGHT PoE Splitter 100Mb is a compact PoE to USB-C splitter that splits a single network cable into two things at once: clean 5V power and a regular 10/100 Mbps data connection. On the input it expects standard PoE to IEEE 802.3af/at (44 – 57 V); on the output you get an RJ45 connector for data and a USB-C connector that powers a device with no PoE support of its own.

In practice this means you can put a coordinator, gateway or small IoT board exactly where the radio reach is best or where it hides most neatly – in a cabinet, in the attic, behind the TV, above a suspended ceiling – without running a mains socket there. One UTP cable from your PoE switch is enough.

How a PoE splitter works and what you get

A PoE splitter does exactly the opposite of a PoE injector. An injector puts power onto the cable; a splitter takes it back off. This model requests power from the switch through automatic PoE negotiation – the switch first recognises that a legitimate PD device is on the far end, and only then sends 48 V down the cable. There is no risk of voltage reaching a port that is not expecting it.

Inside, the voltage is stepped down to a steady 5 V at up to 1 A (5 W) and delivered over USB-C. Data travels on a completely separate branch to the RJ45 connector at 10/100 Mbps. Between the power and data sides sits 2.5 kV galvanic isolation, which protects the connected electronics from surges and ground loops – worth having on runs between buildings or on long industrial cable routes.

The splitter handles both common ways of carrying power in the cable: data on pairs 1/2 (+) and 3/6 (−), power on pairs 4/5 (+) and 7/8 (−). You don't need to worry about which PoE switch you own – it works with any standard 802.3af and 802.3at source.

Most customers buy it for smart home coordinators and gateways. If you are still choosing the coordinator itself, have a look at ZigBee hubs and coordinators – some models, such as the SMLIGHT SLZB-MR1, have PoE built in and don't need a splitter at all. Frequently asked questions

How do I connect the PoE splitter? +

Plug the network cable from your PoE switch or injector into the splitter's input. On the other side you get an RJ45 connector for data – plug that into the device – and a USB-C connector that powers it. There is nothing to set up; the splitter has no buttons and no configuration.

Do I need a PoE switch, or is an injector enough? +

Any PoE source that follows IEEE 802.3af or 802.3at will do – a PoE switch or a standalone PoE injector. What matters is that it is active (standard) PoE, not passive 48 V.

Does it work with passive 48V PoE? +

No. The splitter first requests power through standard PoE negotiation. Passive sources that put voltage on the cable permanently without any detection may not negotiate with it, and the device won't power up.

Will it power a Raspberry Pi 4 or Pi 5? +

Not reliably. The output is 5 V / 1 A, i.e. 5 W, which is not enough for a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 under load. For those boards use a stronger PoE HAT or a higher-current splitter. For a Pi Zero, ESP32 boards, USB dongles and smart home coordinators, 5 W is plenty.

Does it work with SMLIGHT SLZB coordinators and other Zigbee gateways? +

Yes, as long as the device is powered over USB-C at 5 V and draws no more than 1 A – which covers ordinary Zigbee and Thread coordinators and gateways. Models that already have PoE built in don't need the splitter.

Will gigabit Ethernet pass through the splitter? +

No, the data side runs at 10/100 Mbps. For coordinators, sensors, gateways and IoT modules that is more than enough – they send kilobytes at a time. If you need gigabit, look for a gigabit version of the splitter.

What is the difference between a PoE splitter and a PoE injector? +

An injector adds power to the network cable – you use one when your switch has no PoE. A splitter does the opposite: it takes the power off the cable and hands it to a separate connector for a device that doesn't support PoE.

What does 2.5 kV galvanic isolation mean? +

The power and data sections are electrically separated inside and withstand a 2.5 kV test voltage. That protects the connected electronics from surge spikes and ground loops – particularly useful on cables between buildings or in industrial environments.

How far from the switch can the device be? +

The usual Ethernet limit applies – up to 100 metres of cable between the PoE source and the splitter. For longer runs you need a PoE extender or another active device.

The device won't power up – what should I check? +

First check that PoE is actually enabled on that switch port and that it is the 802.3af/at standard. Then check whether the switch's total PoE budget has been exceeded, whether the cable is damaged, and whether the powered device draws more than 1 A. Trying another PoE port also helps.

Can I use it outdoors or in a damp environment? +

No. The IP20 rating and the 0 – 40 °C range at up to 80 % humidity make this an indoor device. Outdoors, mount it only inside a weatherproof enclosure.

What's in the box and what warranty applies? +

The box contains the PoE splitter itself in an antistatic protective bag. A network cable and the powered device are not included. The product comes with the standard 24-month statutory warranty.
