Product detailed description

Smart Temperature and Humidity Sensor with Z-Wave Long Range That Warns You About Mold

Aeotec aërQ 8 is a small Z-Wave temperature and humidity sensor for your apartment, house, office, basement or cabin. It continuously measures temperature and relative humidity and sends the results to your smart home hub. On top of that, it keeps calculating the dew point from the measured values and notifies you when it is time to ventilate.

It is the successor to the popular aërQ sensor. It is built on the Z-Wave 800 platform with Z-Wave Long Range technology, so it connects reliably even in a larger house, across several floors or in an outbuilding.

Most thermometers just show you a number. aërQ 8 tells you what to do with it: when a bedroom is too warm for sleeping, when frost threatens in the basement, or when water starts to condense on a cold exterior wall. This smart hygrometer monitors temperature from -10 to 60 °C with ±1 °C accuracy and relative humidity from 0 to 80 % with ±3 % accuracy.

Features of the aërQ 8 smart temperature and humidity sensor in a room

Dew point and mold warning. Mold forms where warm, humid air meets a cold wall. The sensor therefore constantly compares temperature with humidity and calculates the real risk of condensation. When conditions become critical, the hub receives a notification about mold risk. You can get it on your phone or use it to trigger ventilation, heat recovery or a dehumidifier right away. Place the sensor near the critical spot, for example by an exterior wall, in a corner behind a wardrobe, in the bathroom or in the basement.

Bedroom comfort and frost protection. The temperature sensor alerts you to an overheated bedroom on summer nights, but also to dangerously low temperatures in winter. This prevents frozen pipes at your cabin, in the garage or in an unheated basement. Once you connect it with air conditioning or heating, your home reacts on its own.

Battery or USB-C, your choice. This smart hygrometer runs on one CR14250 lithium battery (3 V, 1500 mAh), which according to the manufacturer lasts up to 4 years (with factory settings the technical specification states about 2 years; battery life depends on how often the sensor sends reports). If you have a USB charger at hand, you can power it permanently via USB-C 5 V and forget about the battery.

Z-Wave 800 a Long Range. The 800 series chip (EFR32ZG23) supports the classic Z-Wave mesh network as well as Z-Wave Long Range, where the sensor connects directly to the hub over a much greater distance. Communication is encrypted via S2 and you add it to the network using SmartStart by scanning the QR code. Model ZWA057-C (also written as ZWA057C) is the European version for the 868.4 MHz frequency. If you are still choosing a hub, check out our smart home controllers, or browse our smart home sensors.

Tamper protection. The sensor has a tamper contact. If someone opens it or removes it, the hub finds out, which you will appreciate for example in a rented apartment or an office.

Who is the aërQ 8 for

  • Households struggling with damp walls, condensation on windows or mold in corners.
  • Owners of cabins, cottages and holiday homes who want to monitor temperature and frost remotely.
  • Users of Home Assistant, Homey, SmartThings or Fibaro who want to automate ventilation and heating.
  • Larger houses and properties where an ordinary Z-Wave sensor cannot reach the basement, garage or workshop.
  • Owners of the older aërQ sensor who want a newer chip, Long Range and USB-C power.

Use cases

  • Automatic bathroom ventilation: when humidity rises after a shower, the sensor turns on the fan and turns it off once the air is dry.
  • Mold warning in the bedroom: when there is a risk of condensation on a cold wall, you get a notification to ventilate.
  • Basement humidity control: when the limit is exceeded, a dehumidifier switches on automatically via a smart plug.
  • Protecting your cabin from frost: when the temperature drops below the set threshold, the hub turns on heating or sends you a message.
  • Comfortable sleep in summer ❄️: when the bedroom overheats, the air conditioning or ceiling fan switches on.
  • Heating control by room: every room has its own measurement, so thermostatic valve heads regulate according to the real temperature.

Protocols and compatibility

  • Z-Wave Plus (800 series): certified sensor with S2 security and SmartStart pairing. Works with any EU Z-Wave hub (868.4 MHz).
  • Z-Wave Long Range: works only with a hub that supports Long Range (Z-Wave 800 with LR). With an older hub the sensor connects in regular mesh mode.
  • Home Assistant: via Z-Wave JS with a USB controller, for example Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro, which also handles Long Range.
  • SmartThings, Homey, Fibaro: the manufacturer states compatibility with these Z-Wave platforms. The scope of support (e.g. dew point display) depends on the hub driver.
  • Signal repeater: the sensor is not a repeater (even when powered via USB-C), so it does not extend your Z-Wave network.
  • Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Matter: not supported, it is strictly a Z-Wave device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add the aërQ 8 to my Z-Wave network?+

The easiest way is SmartStart: scan the QR code on the sensor in your hub app and after inserting the battery it adds itself. If your hub does not support SmartStart, switch it to inclusion mode and press the button on the sensor as described in the manual.

Does the sensor work with Home Assistant?+

Yes, via the Z-Wave JS integration and a Z-Wave USB controller. For Long Range you need a series 800 controller with LR support, for example the Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro.

What is the dew point and why does it matter?+

The dew point is the temperature at which water vapor in the air starts to condense into water. If a wall is close to the dew point temperature, moisture forms on it and mold follows in time. The aërQ 8 calculates the dew point and warns you in time.

Where should I place the sensor to warn about mold correctly?+

Near the critical spot: on an exterior wall, in a room corner, behind furniture by a wall, or in the bathroom and basement. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators and places right above a stove, where short-term spikes would distort the measurement.

How long does the battery last?+

The manufacturer states up to 4 years. With factory settings the technical specification gives about 2 years. You can extend it by setting less frequent reports. When powered via USB-C you do not have to worry about the battery at all.

What battery does the sensor use and where can I buy it?+

It uses a 3 V CR14250 lithium battery (1/2 AA size) with 1500 mAh capacity. The first one is included in the package, replacements are commonly available in electronics stores.

Will a USB-C powered sensor extend my Z-Wave network?+

No. The aërQ 8 does not act as a signal repeater even when powered via USB-C. If you need to strengthen the mesh network, use a Z-Wave plug, relay or a dedicated range extender.

Does Long Range work with every Z-Wave hub?+

No, Long Range requires a series 800 hub with Z-Wave LR support. With an older hub the sensor works normally in the classic mesh network, just without the extended Long Range reach.

How is the aërQ 8 different from the original aërQ?+

The aërQ 8 has a newer series 800 Z-Wave chip, supports Z-Wave Long Range and can also be powered via USB-C. The dew point and mold warning functions remain.

Can I use the sensor outdoors or in an unheated garage?+

The sensor has IP20 protection, so it belongs indoors. It measures down to -10 °C, but the manufacturer specifies an operating temperature of 0 to 40 °C. In a garage or basement place it where it is protected from water and where the temperature does not permanently fall below zero.

Do I need a hub for the sensor?+

Yes. The aërQ 8 has no display or Wi-Fi of its own, it sends data to a Z-Wave hub (e.g. Homey, Fibaro, SmartThings with Z-Wave or Home Assistant with a Z-Wave controller), through which you see it on your phone.

The sensor will not pair, what should I do?+

Make sure you have the EU version (ZWA057-C, 868.4 MHz) and a hub on the same frequency. If the sensor was in another network before, remove it from there first (exclusion) or factory reset it. Move it closer to the hub while pairing.
