Nous E18 WiFi CO detector: carbon monoxide alerts straight to your phone

Nous E18 is a WiFi carbon monoxide detector that continuously monitors the air in your home. When CO levels rise, it instantly sounds a siren of at least 85 dB, flashes a light signal and sends a notification to the Nous Smart app. It connects directly to your 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi network, so you don't need any gateway or hub.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas produced by incomplete combustion in gas boilers, water heaters, fireplaces and solid fuel stoves. Humans cannot detect it with their senses, which is why it is rightly called the silent killer. A reliable CO sensor with phone alerts is therefore one of the most important investments in your home's safety.

At the heart of the device is an electrochemical sensor that picks up even low concentrations of carbon monoxide while barely reacting to other gases. The result is accurate measurement and a minimum of false alarms, which can be a real nuisance with cheap detectors. Electrochemical measurement is precisely what certification under the European standard EN 50291-1:2018 requires, and the Nous E18 meets it. The sensor lifespan is up to 10 years.

In line with the standard, the detector responds gradually, depending on the concentration level and exposure time. At 30 ppm it will not raise an alarm even after 120 minutes (short-term low levels are not dangerous and should not trigger needless alarms), at 50 ppm it sounds the alarm within 60 to 90 minutes, at 100 ppm within 10 to 40 minutes and at a dangerous 300 ppm within 3 minutes. You can see the current ppm reading at any time on the LCD display right on the device.

The biggest advantage over an ordinary CO alarm is the triple warning system. Besides the loud siren and light, the smart detector also alerts you with a push notification in the Nous Smart app, wherever you have an internet connection. So you will know about a problem even when you are at work, on holiday, or when only an elderly parent or children are at home. You can share access to the device with other family members so everyone gets the alert at the same time. The app also shows the event history and current sensor status.

Power is supplied by a lithium CR123A battery (included), which lasts up to 5 years in normal use. This means the detector needs no socket or wiring, and you can mount it exactly where it makes sense. Two screws or 3M double-sided tape are all it takes: installation takes a few minutes and you can do it without drilling, which renters will especially appreciate.

Where to place the detector

The ideal location is a wall at breathing height, i.e. 1.5 to 1.8 m above the floor. In the bedroom, put it near the bed or above the headboard; for boilers and fireplaces, in the same room but not right next to the source. Avoid placing it directly above a cooker or oven (cooking fumes can cause false alarms), in bathrooms and garages, or near windows, doors, vents or radiators.

• Home Assistant and Homey: the manufacturer does not list official support for the WiFi version. If you want to include a CO detector in local automations, choose the Zigbee version Nous E12.
