Product detailed description

SmartWise WiFi dry contact switch for gates, garages and 230V appliances

The SmartWise 1-channel WiFi relay is a smart switch module with a single output that works with the eWeLink app (the same ecosystem as Sonoff). Unlike ordinary smart relays, it has a potential-free (dry) contact with COM, NO and NC terminals, so the controlled circuit is fully isolated from the relay power supply. This lets you switch a 230 V device, a low-voltage circuit up to 30 V DC or the voltage-free input of a gate control unit.

The relay comes already built into a plastic protective box with screw terminals. It is not a bare board that needs a separate enclosure, but a finished device ready to install right out of the box.

You power the relay either directly from the mains at 85 to 250 V AC (live + neutral) or via micro USB 5 V DC. USB power is handy wherever you have no neutral wire at hand, for example at a gate control unit with a USB adapter nearby. The controlled circuit handles 90 to 250 V / 10 A AC or 0 to 30 V / 10 A DC, or works as a pure voltage-free contact.

The biggest advantage of this smart switch module is its pulse (momentary) mode. After switching on, the relay opens again by itself after a set time (for example 0.5 or 1 second), exactly as if you pressed a wall button. That is how the inputs of most garage door and gate operators work, which makes this WiFi gate relay one of the simplest ways to control them from your phone. You set pulse mode directly in the app, without moving jumpers on the board.

Besides Wi-Fi, the relay also has an eWeLink-Remote Bluetooth interface. You can pair a remote directly with it, for example the SmartWise BT4 eWeLink-Remote controller, which switches the relay locally even when the internet is down. If you are looking for more dry contact modules, check out the dry contact switches category.

In the eWeLink app you see the current relay state and can set timers, countdowns, cyclic switching and automatic switch-off after a set time. Up to 8 timers are stored in the relay itself and run even without a cloud connection. You can share access with your family and add the relay to scenes with other Sonoff or SmartWise devices, for example switching on a fan based on a temperature sensor.

Who is this relay for

  • Owners of garage doors and gate operators who want to open them from their phone.
  • Sonoff and eWeLink users who want to add a dry contact switch to their system.
  • Electricians and DIYers who need a versatile relay for 230 V and low-voltage circuits.
  • Anyone who wants a finished device in a box without buying an enclosure separately.

Use cases

  • Opening the garage door from your phone: connect the relay in pulse mode in parallel with the operator wall button and open the door from the app, by voice or with the SmartWise BT4 Bluetooth remote 🚗
  • Remote control of a sliding or swing gate: the voltage-free contact triggers the START input of the control unit.
  • Electric lock and buzzer on the gate: a short pulse releases the lock regardless of its supply voltage up to 30 V DC.
  • Switching a boiler or ventilation unit: the NO/NC contact replaces a classic thermostat or adds remote switching.
  • Irrigation and pumps: a timer switches a pump or valve up to 10 A on a schedule.
  • Lighting and 230V appliances: switch lights, fans or heaters from the app or by voice.

Key features

  • Box included: the relay is already in a plastic protective case with terminals, nothing else to buy.
  • Dry contact: the controlled circuit is galvanically isolated from the relay power supply.
  • NO and NC: choose whether the circuit is open or closed at rest.
  • Dual power supply: 85 to 250 V AC or 5 V DC via micro USB.
  • Pulse mode: short switching set in the app, ideal for gates and locks.
  • eWeLink-Remote: direct Bluetooth control with SmartWise remotes, even without internet.
  • Offline timers: up to 8 timers stored directly in the relay.
  • Voice control: Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Google Nest.
  • Physical button: switch the relay directly on the device too.

Protocols and compatibility

  • Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz: connects to your home network (802.11 b/g/n), 5 GHz networks are not supported.
  • eWeLink (iOS, Android): full control, timers, scenes and sharing. Cloud mode by default, with a LAN mode with limited features when the internet is down.
  • eWeLink-Remote (Bluetooth): direct pairing with SmartWise eWeLink-Remote remotes and wall switches, for example the BT4 controller. According to the distributor, Sonoff remotes are not compatible.
  • RF 433 MHz: not supported. If you need RF or Zigbee, go for the SmartWise 1-channel 5-32V RF+Zigbee relay.
  • Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Google Nest: voice control after linking your eWeLink account.
  • External switch: a classic wired wall switch cannot be connected, only SmartWise eWeLink-Remote wireless switches.
  • MQTT, REST API: not supported.

Why choose the SmartWise 1-channel WiFi relay

  • A finished device in a box for the price others charge for a bare board.
  • Dry NO/NC contact and pulse mode handle gates, locks and boilers.
  • Local Bluetooth control keeps working even when the internet goes down.

Compared with the SmartWise 1-channel 5-32V RF+Zigbee relay, for which the DIN rail box is sold separately, you get the enclosure included and power directly from 230 V. The Zigbee version, on the other hand, suits you if you have a Zigbee gateway or FIBARO HC3. If you also want to see whether the door is open or closed, check out the SmartWise WiFi garage door opener.

Frequently asked questions

Is the box included, or do I need to buy it separately?+

The box is included. The relay is already built into a plastic protective case with terminals, so there is nothing else to buy.

How do I wire the relay to control a garage door?+

Power the relay from 230 V (L and N) or from USB. Connect the COM and NO terminals in parallel with the button or to the START input of the operator control unit and enable pulse mode in the eWeLink app, for example 1 second. Leave mains 230 V wiring to a qualified electrician.

What does a potential-free (dry) contact mean?+

The relay does not send any voltage of its own to the output, it only connects or disconnects two wires, like a mechanical button. That is why it can safely control the inputs of control units, boilers and gates that expect a voltage-free contact.

What is the difference between NO and NC wiring?+

With COM and NO, the circuit is open at rest and the relay closes it. With COM and NC, the circuit is closed at rest and the relay interrupts it. NC wiring is used for example with operators that respond to an interrupted circuit.

Do I need a neutral wire?+

When powered from the mains, yes, the relay needs both live and neutral. If you have no neutral, you can power it via a micro USB 5 V adapter.

Does the relay work without internet?+

Yes, partly. Up to 8 timers run directly in the relay, eWeLink-Remote remotes switch it via Bluetooth and the app LAN mode works on the local network with limited features. Remote control away from home requires internet.

Which remote controls can I use?+

SmartWise eWeLink-Remote Bluetooth remotes and wireless switches, for example the BT4 controller. RF 433 MHz remotes and Sonoff remotes are not supported by this relay.

Can I connect a classic wall switch to the relay?+

No, the relay has no input for a wired switch. As a wall switch you can use a SmartWise eWeLink-Remote wireless switch or the physical button directly on the relay.

Why can’t I pair the relay with Wi-Fi?+

The most common cause is a 5 GHz network. The relay supports only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz network when pairing and turn on Bluetooth and location on your phone.

Does the relay work with Alexa and Google Home?+

Yes. After linking your eWeLink account with Amazon Alexa or Google Home, you can control it by voice and add it to routines.

How is it different from the SmartWise 5-32V RF+Zigbee relay?+

This relay communicates via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, is powered from 230 V or USB and comes with the box. The Zigbee version runs on 5 to 32 V, supports RF remotes and Zigbee gateways (including FIBARO HC3) and its DIN rail box is sold separately.

Can the relay be mounted on a DIN rail?+

No, the box is not designed for DIN rail mounting. Place the relay in an installation box, in the gate operator housing or fix it to a flat surface.
