Auto inclusion

Auto Inclusion

This term refers to a clever feature of Z-Wave devices that allows them to pair with a smart home hub without the need for complicated button presses (often the classic "triple-click"). A device with this feature will automatically attempt to find an open network and join it as soon as it is connected to a power supply.

In practice, this means that if you are installing a hidden relay switch, you can simply start the inclusion mode on your hub's app and then turn on the circuit breaker. As soon as the relay receives power, it will automatically sync with the system.

Things to keep in mind:

This feature is a lifesaver if you have already installed a module in a hard-to-reach wall box and forgot to pair it first. However, if you wire up and power on multiple devices at the same time, the hub will add them randomly (based on which one responds first). In large installations, you might easily lose track of which module controls which light. Also, keep in mind that the auto-inclusion process is usually permanently cancelled if you press the physical wall switch or the pairing button on the device during the process.

Tip: The modern evolution of this feature in newer Z-Wave devices is SmartStart. It allows you to add a device to the network before it is even installed—simply by scanning a QR code on the box with your Smart Home app.
