Association

Device Association

Association is a feature that allows direct communication between two Z-Wave devices without the signal having to pass through the smart home hub. For example, if you associate a wireless wall switch with a smart relay module in the ceiling, pressing the switch sends a state-change command directly to the relay.

The biggest advantage of this feature is its complete independence from the main controller. Although the association is initially configured within the smart home hub interface, once saved, it operates entirely on its own. The devices will continue to communicate with each other reliably even if the hub is temporarily turned off, restarting, or experiencing a failure.

Configuration is done using Association Groups. Each device can have multiple groups, with each group responding to a different trigger. For instance, a multi-sensor might use "Group 2" to turn on a light when motion is detected, and "Group 3" to trigger a siren if there's a rapid temperature rise. Since a single device can have up to dozens of these groups, it is crucial to always consult the included manual during setup.

In practice, associations are most often used for critical applications—a prime example being linking a wall thermostat directly to a boiler relay switch. This ensures that your heating system will function flawlessly under any circumstances.
